What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax introduced in India on July 1, 2017. It replaced multiple indirect taxes like VAT, Service Tax, Central Excise Duty, and others. GST is a destination-based tax, meaning it is collected at the point of consumption rather than the point of origin. This unified tax structure has simplified the taxation system and created a common national market for goods and services across India.
Types of GST in India
CGST (Central GST)
CGST is collected by the Central Government on intra-state supplies (transactions within the same state). The revenue from CGST goes to the central government.
SGST (State GST)
SGST is collected by the State Government on intra-state supplies. The revenue from SGST goes to the respective state government. When both CGST and SGST apply, they are charged at equal rates.
IGST (Integrated GST)
IGST is charged on inter-state supplies (transactions between different states) and imports. It is collected by the Central Government.
